At the hotel, John receives a phone call from Bertani, instructing him to meet the man, H. The flirtatious Danielle then drops John off at the Carlton Hotel beach, where unknown to him, he is observed by a beautiful woman. Foussard, one of Bertani's workers, helps John flee and delivers him to his teenage daughter Danielle, who takes John out in a motor boat. As John is leaving the restaurant, he is spotted by the still-pursuing police detectives. Instead, Bertani offers to put John in contact with a man who two days before asked for the same information. Feeling that his only recourse is to catch the thief himself, John asks Bertani for information about his rich customers. Although Bertani is sympathetic to John's plight, the other restaurant workers treat him hostily, fearing that his apparent transgression will cast suspicion on them. John then races to see his old friend, Bertani, a restaurateur with whom he fought in the French Resistance and whose employees are all ex-convicts like John. When police detectives come to question him at his hilltop villa near Cannes, John cleverly eludes them.

“We were bringing him back to the store, we did not call the police yet, but he ran again. We chased him and caught him,” said Dahnoun, who put the grab on the suspect with fellow employee Jafir Abbas. That’s where Ahmed Dahnoun, one of Farhat’s bakers, picks up the tale. “They chased him down into the neighbourhood, I think he jumped over a fence.” I yelled, and I had three of my staff chase him down.”īut not before a foot chase through nearby Steve MacLean park and at least one local backyard. “He just came out and grabbed the donation box, right there,” said Farhat, gesturing to the spot beside the cash register where the box usually is located. Inside was a tidy mound of change and small bills.After scooping the box, the thief raced out the door. When the man left the bathroom, he passed the front counter and immediately grabbed a donation box for a local mosque.
“He had a little black face scarf or something covering part of his face. “He walked in and was wearing all black,” Farhat told the Sun moments later.
Walid Farhat, whose family has operated the popular local bakery for several years, was at the front counter serving his morning customers. The incident started just before 9 a.m., at the Farhat Bakery in the Parkwood Hills Plaza at Fisher and Meadowlands.
